Contrast Relationships in Discourse

Abstract: Many examples of contrast in the literature are presented in isolation, but speakers seldom contrast just for the sake of contrasting. In my talk I will present preliminary results of a corpus study of the way in which contrastive relationships relate to the surrounding discourse, in particular the rhetorical relationship by which a contrast relation is connected to the context in which it occurs.
